Lab42’s mission is to develop human-level artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. The development and application of novel AI approaches allow to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges, such as disease, hunger, and environmental issues, and humanity to enter a new golden age.
Human-Level Artificial Intelligence (HLAI, or AGI) can significantly improve health and living conditions for people across the globe.
It allows to solve the pressing challenges humanity is currently facing and to create possibilities and prosperity for all of humankind.
Based in Davos, Switzerland, Lab42 is committed to Swiss humanistic values and pursues an open, talent-based research approach that attracts the world’s brightest minds.
Collaborating with partners from research, society and business, Lab42 turns discoveries into real-world applications and facilitates the use of reliable and trustworthy AI.
The Lab42 AI research institute is located in Davos, Switzerland, surrounded by world-class research institutions.
In contrast to profit-oriented AI companies, Lab42 pursues a public good-oriented and open research approach.
It collaborates with leading universities worldwide and organizes AI competitions to promote innovative solutions and promising AI talents from around the globe.
Lab42 does not pursue the incremental advancement and optimization of existing AI approaches but focuses on the development of completely new solutions that permit the trustworthy and efficient application of AI.
Unlike many others, Lab42 does not view intelligence as the ability to solve specific tasks, such as playing Go or answering quizzes, but rather as the ability to autonomously create new solutions to previously unknown problems. Put simply, intelligence is not the application of learned knowledge but the innovative creation of new solutions.
As humans regularly encounter new, unknown challenges in everyday life, only AI based on this understanding of intelligence can support humans effectively and reliably. Existing approaches fail when faced with unknown tasks and can therefore only be used for clearly defines problems but not in the open human world.
To understand the world and perform actions, AI must be embodied. For this, Lab42 uses the latest generations of humanoid robots. Equipped with powerful AI, they can support people in strenuous and dangerous tasks.
For an introduction into Lab42’s research, see for example our publications on the limitations of OpenAI’s GPT and on the conception of intelligence.
To ensure progress in the development of human-level AI and its application for the benefit of humanity, Lab42 collaborates with institutions from all over the world; from Swiss universities such as ZHAW, FHGR and ETH, to companies and other non-profit organizations.
Lab42 representatives regularly give speeches, consult companies, teach at universities, take part in public discussions and are available to the media so that the public can gain an understanding of artificial intelligence and make informed decisions about its future role in society.
Among others, Lab42 organises events such as panel discussions and speeches during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, the yearly Davos Tech Summit, and the yearly Global Swiss AI Award, whose winders include François Chollet, Demis Hassabis, Yann LeCun and Jakob Uszkoreit.
